English as an Additional Language (EAL)
Intent
At Knights Enham School Federation, we value linguistic diversity and see pupils’ home languages as an asset. Our intent is to ensure that all pupils with English as an Additional Language feel welcomed, included and supported to achieve their full academic and social potential across both the Infant and Junior Schools. We aim to develop pupils’ confidence and competence in spoken and written English while maintaining high expectations for progress across the full curriculum. Through a consistent, inclusive approach across the federation, we strive to remove language barriers so that EAL learners can access learning, develop a strong sense of belonging and become confident, independent learners.
Implementation
EAL provision is embedded across the curriculum and supported through high-quality teaching in every classroom. Staff use a range of inclusive strategies such as clear modelling of language, visual supports, scaffolding, vocabulary pre-teaching and opportunities for structured talk. Learning is carefully differentiated so that EAL pupils can access age-appropriate content while developing their English skills.
Across both schools in the federation, pupils’ language proficiency is assessed on entry and monitored regularly to ensure appropriate support. Targeted interventions, small-group work and in-class support are used where necessary. Staff work closely with families, valuing pupils’ first languages and cultural backgrounds, and use these as a foundation for learning. Professional development ensures that staff have a shared understanding of effective EAL strategies and consistent practice across the Infant and Junior phases.
Impact
As a result of our EAL approach, pupils develop increasing confidence in spoken and written English and are able to fully access the curriculum. EAL learners make good progress from their starting points, narrowing gaps where they exist and achieving in line with their peers. Pupils demonstrate strong engagement in learning, positive attitudes and a sense of belonging within the school community. Through consistent practice across the federation, EAL pupils transition smoothly between the Infant and Junior Schools, ensuring continuity of support and sustained progress.
